Qualities we’re looking for

We’ve built our entire recruitment process around three core pillars. We’re sharing them with you right now so you know exactly what we’re looking for. When you’re writing your personal statement or prepping for your interview, come back to this page. Think about how your own experiences, studies, and passions match up with these qualities.

Our competencies

As you move through your application, use these three profiles as your checklist. If your personal statement hits on all three, you're already on the right track.

I know my stuff and inspire others; only my best is good enough

Competencies: Knowledgeable, reflective

Tutor Trust values: I am ambitious and I learn

What it actually means: You don’t just memorize facts; you love sharing them. You're also not afraid to look back at a session and think, "How can I make this even better next time?"

I am reliable and represent the charity well; I take responsibility for delivering high-quality tuition

Competencies: Committed, communicative

Tutor Trust values: I am quality-focused and passionate about making a difference

What it actually means: You show up, you keep people in the loop, and you genuinely care about the standard of support you are bringing to a young person's life.

I see my pupils and they feel seen by me; I believe every young person can make progress

Competencies: Engaging, inclusive

Tutor Trust values: I am inclusive, supportive and fair

What it actually means: You meet pupils where they are. You bring the energy, shut out bias, and create a space where every young person feels comfortable enough to try, fail, and grow.

You don't need to be a teacher or tutor already to work with us, you just need to get a buzz from helping someone finally get something they've been stuck on.

We're looking for people who genuinely believe every pupil can make progress, no matter where they're starting from. People who know their subject well enough to explain it clearly when someone's struggling. People who actually show up, consistently, because pupils need you there week after week, not just for one great session.

You'll need to be ready to receive feedback and want to keep improving. You'll need to get through training, turn up to Live Sessions, and complete all of the background checks. And because you're in schools, safeguarding and professional conduct aren't optional extras.

We sum this up in three things: knowing your stuff, being someone the charity can rely on, and making pupils feel genuinely seen.
