Use of AI

While we understand AI can assist with writing, your personal statement must be your own original work. We are looking for your unique perspective, your personal experiences, and your genuine passion for this role. Submissions that are found to be primarily AI-generated will not be considered further. Please use AI only as a tool for structuring or refining your own thoughts and words. The core content, examples, and your individual voice should be clearly evident and authentic.

We're eager to get to know the real you. Let your individuality shine through!

A King's Trust assignment is a 12-week package of tutoring and support for preparation for the next steps in education or the world of work. This enables the tutor to build a relationship with the pupils that not only supports academic progress but also contributes to their readiness for next steps or career aspirations. Training and materials to support this kind of assignment are provided by the Tutoring Plus team, alongside access to the King's Trust Achieve education hub.

A Time for Me assignment is a 12-week package of tutoring and mentoring. This enables the tutor to build a relationship with the pupils that not only supports academic progress but also contributes to general well-being and confidence. Training and materials to support this kind of assignment are provided by the Tutoring Plus Team.

All tutors are eligible to apply for a Tutoring Plus assignment provided you have completed the training in the subject required. The Tutoring Plus team will support you with these very rewarding but slightly different assignments. Why not give it a go!

Please contact your Programme Coordinator, who will review your payslip with you and follow up on any discrepancies you identify together.

Tutors will be paid a minimum of £22 (£25 for qualified teachers) to plan and deliver a one-hour tuition session. This includes planning, preparation, and record-keeping, as well as the time working directly with pupils.

We will aim to respond to all bids within a few days. If you are concerned, you will find the contact details of the relevant coordinator in the position’s shift notes. Please do not hesitate to reach out and request an update on your application.

Your application should confirm your availability - you may be asked to specify particular days or times. Please also let us know of any relevant contextual factors- for example, if you live close by, have previously worked at the school, or have any other circumstance that supports your application. We will try our best to ensure that everybody gets the chance to work with us; please make us aware if you are continually declined.

Yes – you would still be considered for an assignment. Please make your availability clear in your application – sometimes a school can be flexible!

In preparation for an upcoming assignment, utilise all of the information given to you in the Introductory Meeting document. You can also access training and lesson-planning resources via the training section in the Tutor:HUB. Please do not hesitate to contact your Programme Coordinator who can put you in touch with our Development team.

Your Programme Coordinator will have emailed you a copy of your Introductory Meeting document. This includes key information about your programme logistics, the content you’ll be delivering, the school’s address and contact details, as well as all relevant contacts, including the School Partnership Lead, Designated Safeguarding Lead, Programme Coordinator, and Tutor Trust Safeguarding Leads.

You will also receive an email before your assignment urging you to log into the Tutor:HUB. You will be able to access more information about the attendees her as well.

Your pupils should complete a baseline assessment in the second hour of tuition, and an endpoint assessment in the fourteenth hour. Prior to these assessment dates, our Quality and Impact team will email you to explain the steps you must take to set up the assessments, as well as a video tutorial and assessment guidelines. After an assessment, please allow some time for the team to publish the results. You will have access to the results but should note that they are not used as a reflection of tutor quality. These assessments are used for internal development and understanding.

In either case, please make the school aware as soon as possible, via email or phone. Please also alert your Programme Coordinator with as much notice as possible, so that cover can be organised or sessions can be rescheduled.

If no pupils attend a session, please inform both your Programme Coordinator and the School Partnership Lead. You will still be paid for the session, provided the school did not give prior notice of the absences.

It is common for some of our students in Tutoring Plus assignments to have significant gaps in their learning. It is therefore important to consistently liaise with the school and the coordinator to confirm the areas of tuition focus. In addition, it is advisable to start with get-to-know activities and simple games to engage the students with the subjects and build rapport in a positive learning environment. These initial steps will help you better understand the student's needs, and learning style, and identify the gaps.

Tutoring Plus assignments combine 1:1 academic support with other provisions to boost a young person's confidence, life skills, or social and emotional well-being. These young people already face more challenges than their classmates, including having more complex needs and learning gaps due to missing school. Tuition can be delivered in school, at home and online.

Please speak to the programme coordinators you work alongside. Should you wish to continue with us, we will endeavour to find a way of making tuition work for you. We will support you in your decision-making and respect your wishes.

Tutors should be available for the entirety of an assignment when they agree to take it on. It’s important to the young people we work with that they have consistency. However, we recognise that things can happen unexpectedly which affect your availability. Please discuss these things with your programme coordinator with as much notice as possible.

These are the different styles of monitoring that we use to ensure high-quality tuition and assess any support you might benefit from. This is a supportive process that focuses on your successes as foundations on which to build.

Your feedback should include details about the content covered in your session, updates on pupil behaviour and engagement, areas of progress or difficulty, follow-up actions, and any recommendations. Please also include attendance notes, such as the names of any unexpected attendees, and highlight any safeguarding concerns (which should also be reported to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and your Programme Coordinator).

The process you should follow for reporting concerns is:

•          Report the issue as soon as practically possible to the school/college’s DSL (i.e., before you leave the school/college building); and

•          Report the issue as soon as practically possible to The Tutor Trust’s DSL or Deputy DSLs.

Your coordinator will provide you with all relevant safeguarding contacts or you can refer to this page on Safeguarding.

Sometimes, assignment dates are altered e.g. if some sessions have been rescheduled. If this happens and you are unavailable, we may find an available cover tutor for the sessions you will miss, or rearrange them for the following term, depending on what suits the school or college best.

The programme coordinator will confirm all arrangements with you before the assignment begins, but you can also see details of all your active assignments on the Tutor:HUB.

It is important to note that there are busier times throughout the academic year, and it is a good idea to frequently check the Tutor:HUB for possible placements that are suitable, as these can become available at different times.

At some points throughout the year, there may be a shortage of certain assignments. These cannot always be guaranteed.

In the meantime, please feel free to reach out about possible transfer training opportunities or support to a member of our team.

Once we’ve been notified that your DBS has been issued, we’ll contact you with guidance on how to add this to the DBS Update Service. The Update Service is an online subscription service that lets you keep your DBS certificate up to date. It also allows employers to check your certificate online. Once your DBS has been added to the Update Service, your new DBS will be complete.

To complete your DBS process, you need to add your DBS to the Update Service within 21 days of your DBS issue date. Unfortunately, we’re unable to do this for you and there is a charge of £16, but we’ll reimburse this cost in your first tutor pay.

Our tutors require an Enhanced DBS certificate that is listed on the Update Service.

If you need a replacement certificate, you can order a replacement.

If you did your GCSEs (or equivalent) abroad, please send us these certificates.

Please send the following documents:

  • Original copies of your GCSE English and GCSE Maths certificates. If you have applied to be a science tutor, please also provide original copies of your GCSE Science certificate(s). If you need a replacement certificate, you can order a replacement.
  • Two identification documents (e.g., your passport, driving licence, or biometric residence permit).
  • One right-to-work document; this can be the same document as one of the above.
  • One proof of address document.

If you want to change your initial training to a different subject, please get in touch

Once you've completed your initial training in your chosen subject, you're welcome to expand your tutoring capabilities, so long as you have the necessary grades/qualifications in other subjects. In fact, the more subjects you're qualified to tutor in (such as maths, English, and science), the more tutoring opportunities will become available to you; we encourage all tutors to undertake transfer training in additional subjects to help you grow your skills and access even more opportunities.

To ensure a smooth and fair process for everyone, our Recruitment and Development Team monitors instances where deadlines are missed, or communication isn't as proactive as needed. If there's an accumulation of instances relating to a lack of communication, missed deadlines, or other significant issues, this unfortunately means we may be unable to continue with your tutor training or processing.

We understand that life can sometimes present unexpected challenges, and reaching out to us proactively and communicating openly is always the best approach when these situations arise, so that we can discuss potential accommodations. Consistent communication, including responding promptly to our messages and keeping us informed of any potential delays, is not only key to successfully completing your training but is also a cornerstone of effective tutoring.

Our Core Training and live sessions are key to your progress, as detailed here. • Child Protection in Education
  • The Prevent Duty
  • Keeping Children Safe in Education 2025 Part 1 Questionnaire
  • Keeping Children Safe in Education 2025 Annex A Questionnaire

Completing these is a legal requirement before you start working with children.

When you have completed all 4 courses, email us your certificates.

The training involves approximately 10 hours of online, self-paced learning that you can complete at your convenience. In addition, there are three Live Sessions held on Zoom with our trainers and fellow new tutors, totalling 3.5 hours spread across these sessions. You can find more information on Core Tutor Training here.

Once you have been successful at interview, please watch out for an email inviting you to start training. If you don’t receive this email within 24 hours of your interview success email, please email us.

All your training content will be accessible here on the Tutor:HUB.

Once you have sent us all of your documents and had an ID check, you will receive an email from Sign-In Central Record with an invite for you to begin your DBS application.

Once you’ve followed the instructions from this email, you should receive another email from Verifile which will contain guidance on how to complete your DBS application.

Verifile will notify us when you submit your application, and we’ll progress this using the documents that you have sent and have been verified in person. When the application is complete, your DBS certificate will be issued and sent to the main address that you entered on your application.

Tutors who have resided in a country outside of the UK for a consecutive period of 6 months or more within the last 5 years are required to have an overseas police check completed. You can find out more information and how to begin the process on the UK Government's criminal records checks for overseas applicants.

In summary, an overseas police check is a criminal record check from another country, used to verify an individual's criminal history in a foreign nation. It's often required for employment in certain sectors, visa applications, or when individuals have lived abroad. The process and specific documents required can vary by country.  Our team will be in touch if you need to complete one of these.

If you need a replacement certificate, you can order a replacement.

If you did your GCSEs (or equivalent) abroad, please send us these certificates.

As soon as possible after receiving your interview success email, please make sure that you’ve sent the following documents to the team:

  • Original copies of your GCSE English and GCSE Maths certificates. If you have applied to be a science tutor, please also provide original copies of your GCSE Science certificate(s). If you need a replacement certificate, you can order a replacement.
  • Two identification documents (e.g., your passport, driving licence, or biometric residence permit).
  • One right-to-work document; this can be the same document as one of the above.
  • One proof of address document.

For most tutors it takes 35 days from a successful interview to complete training, pre-employment checks and receive your DBS. Then you can start applying for tutoring assignments.

However, this is just a guide. Pre-employment, especially overseas and DBS checks, can take varying amounts of time. It’s important that you respond in a timely manner to requests from our team to ensure that this process happens as swiftly as possible.

Please first check your Spam/Junk folder. Sometimes automated emails can take up to 24 hours to arrive due to virus and safety checks.

If you still haven’t received your login information please contact Support.

Please watch out for an email inviting you to start training. If you don’t receive this email within 24 hours of your interview success email, please email us.

You'll complete a compulsory training course specific to your subject. The dates for the online live sessions can be found on our Core Training page.

You’ll also receive an email about your DBS check, where we will ask you to send copies of the following:

  • Original copies of your GCSE English and GCSE Maths certificates. If you have applied to be a science tutor, please also provide original copies of your GCSE Science certificate(s). If you need a replacement certificate, you can order a replacement.
  • Two identification documents (e.g., your passport, driving licence, or biometric residence permit).
  • One right-to-work document; this can be the same document as one of the above.
  • One proof of address document.

Please also inform your two referees that they will shortly receive an email from our Recruitment Team, with an electronic reference form to fill in.

Get in touch as soon as possible to let us know - please include your reasons for cancelling or if you wish to reschedule, your availability.

If your application is successful, you'll be invited to an online interview with a panel of two people. This interview is a chance for us to get to know you better and for you to learn more about the role. We ask that you have your camera enabled for this interview.

During the interview, the panel will ask you a set of four questions covering key aspects of the tutor role, including your motivations for joining Tutor Trust and your interest and passion for the subject you want to tutor. These questions are designed to help us understand your skills, experience, and approach.

You will also take part in a five-minute roleplay situation and this will be sent to you prior to the interview so that you can prepare. We ask all candidates the same set of questions to ensure a fair and consistent process. The panel will be taking notes throughout the interview. This is to ensure they have a clear record of your answers and can make a fair and justifiable decision based on the evidence you provide.

All our interviews take place on Zoom. Please ensure you have a quiet space and a strong internet connection in advance so that the interview can run smoothly.

The interview will take around 30 minutes.

The working day before your interview, we ask that you return a Self-Declaration Form, which will be sent to you via email.

During the interview, we will also need to see proof of photo ID on screen, so please have this to hand.

For more information on our data protection policy, please see our Privacy Policy.

All our tutors are required to complete our comprehensive Core Tutor Training. This essential training will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to excel in your role.

We aim to review applications within 14 days. If you haven’t heard from us after that, feel free to get in touch

Our trained shortlisting panel carefully reviews every application to assess how well each applicant meets the requirements for the role. We look at your entire application, but pay particular attention to your personal statement, so please provide plenty of detail. We take a holistic approach:

  • We read your entire application: We look for relevant information in all sections, not just one. For example, if you mention experience with children in your personal statement but not in the work history section, we'll still consider it.
  • We focus on how you meet the requirements: Our assessment is based on how well you demonstrate the skills and experience needed for the role.

Applicants who best demonstrate how their skills and experience align with what we're looking for will be invited for an interview.

We want to support you if you need an adjustment during the recruitment process. The Tutor Trust is committed to making sure that our selection methods are fair to everyone. If you request a Reasonable Adjustment on your application form, a member of our recruitment and development team will contact you to understand and confirm the type of adjustment(s) you need.

Adjustments will be offered based on your needs and considered on a case-by-case basis, so please don’t be afraid to ask for help if you think you need it. If you have any questions about Reasonable Adjustments, get in touch.

We're asking whether you anticipate any challenges - such as scheduling conflicts, other commitments, or location - that might affect your ability to carry out your tutoring responsibilities reliably. This helps us ensure we can support you effectively and maintain a consistent experience for students.

At Tutor Trust, Widening Participation means making sure we provide equal access and opportunities for everyone, especially those from backgrounds that are underrepresented in education. Through our Tutor Access Programme (TAP), we aim to build a tutor team that reflects the communities and young people we support.

We ask if you identify with any of the listed backgrounds to help us fairly assess your application and ensure our team is diverse and inclusive. Sharing this info is voluntary - if you’d rather not say, just select I prefer not to specify. If you want to know more about how we handle your data, you can contact us or read the Privacy Policy.

It is an offence to apply for a role if you are barred from engaging in regulated activity relevant to children. You can read our full child protection and safeguarding policies and practices on our website.

We recognise that valuable subject knowledge and skills can be acquired through various routes. If you do not meet the GCSE grade 6 requirement, please tell us in your application if you:

  • Studied that subject at A-Level;
  • Are currently studying for a degree in the subject or a closely related field;
  • Applied your subject knowledge through an extended period of relevant work or volunteering experience;
  • Gained qualifications equivalent to GCSE level in that subject in another country. We accept international equivalents if you did not attend school in the UK, such as IGCSEs, WASSCE, or Irish Junior Cycle. Please fill out your qualifications in the Education Details section;
  • Possess significant lived experience, particularly backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in higher education or other experiences of navigating educational disadvantage, recognising the importance of intersectional identities. Lived experiences provide a strong understanding of the multiple and interconnected challenges pupils from similar backgrounds may face and are a significant asset in relating to and supporting them. Your insights into the subject matter, informed by your own experiences, are highly valued.

For any questions about grade requirements, please get in touch.

We are building a tutor community that mirrors the diverse backgrounds of the young people we support. We actively encourage applications from individuals with varied experiences and perspectives, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds and those with lived experiences of marginalisation, valuing the unique experiences shaped by diverse and intersecting aspects of identity (like race, gender, class, and disability) and lived experience of marginalisation. We believe this diversity enriches our team and enables us to connect with and support our pupils more effectively.

Our application form includes equity monitoring questions. The information you provide will help us monitor the effectiveness of our recruitment policies and procedures in the long term and will form part of your record if your application is successful.

We aim to create an inclusive recruitment process. If you require any reasonable adjustments to participate fully in the application or interview stages, please let us know.

You don't need to have teaching or tutoring experience to be a tutor with us, as we provide full training and support; however, if you do have any such experience, please highlight this in your application.

If you're a qualified teacher, then you'll have a bespoke training route to reflect this.

We believe your time and expertise are invaluable! At Tutor Trust, you'll earn a minimum of £22 per hour for planning and delivering each tutoring session. For the most up-to-date information on our pay rates and exciting incentives, please visit our dedicated page on how much you could earn.

Most tutoring is:

  • During the school day (8.00 - 16.00)
  • Inside the school/college building
  • During school/college term times.

Assignment lengths range from a one hour session, to a morning  or afternoon, up to a full day.

You can apply for as many assignments as you wish, but we ask that you consider that each tutoring assignment typically lasts 15 weeks. We follow the term timetable of partner schools, so tuition can sometimes run one or two weeks into the university holidays. Therefore, please check your availability before applying for an assignment.

The amount of available work varies depending on the time of year and the demand from schools/colleges and we cannot guarantee that work at a particular time or in a certain area will be available.

We work with schools across Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, Tees Valley and Merseyside, so travel of up to an hour within your city region may be required to get to a tutoring assignment. Assignments that require more than an hour's commute may have an uplift in pay to reflect this.

Take a look at the information on the following pages to see where we work in each region:

To be a tutor with us, you need to have a minimum of grade 6 at GCSE (or equivalent) in the subject you wish to tutor.

If you’re successful in your application, we’ll need to see your GCSE certificates as evidence of achieving these grades.

If you attended school before the advent of GCSEs, please enter your O-level grades in the ‘Education Details' section of the application.

International qualifications

We accept international equivalents if you did not attend school in the UK, such as IGCSEs, WASSCE, or Irish Junior Cycle. Please fill out your qualifications in the ‘Education Details’ section.

For any questions about grade requirements, please get in touch.

The Programme Coordinators will confirm the hours with the school(s)/college(s) where you have been working on a weekly basis. However, please also keep a record of the hours you work to ensure that you are paid the correct amount.

If you think that you have been paid incorrectly, please contact your Programme Coordinator, who will review your payslip with you and follow up on any discrepancies you identify together. we will do our best to resolve any queries in a timely manner.

For any technical problems such as trouble registering or for help logging in, such as issues with resetting your password please email support

Tutor Trust will pay you in full for all sessions that are cancelled by the school/college less than 24 hours before the start time. This policy will only apply to face-to-face sessions (not online).

You will be paid for this month’s tutoring on the 15th of the following month, or earlier if the 15th falls at a weekend. For example, all tuition delivered in May will be paid on 15th June. Please note that payment is dependent on you submitting all registers in good time before the monthly deadline, which will be communicated to you by your Programme Coordinator.

If registers are not submitted within a week after the end of the month the session took place you may not be paid until the following month.

An unexpected attendee is a pupil who joins a session but is not listed on the register and has not been formally swapped in. In this case, please tick the unexpected attendance checkbox and include their name in the register feedback. Keep track of how many times the pupil attends - if they attend more than three times, inform your Programme Coordinator.

Your application form is the first step towards becoming a valued tutor with Tutor Trust. Each vacancy has an online application form on this HUB. Please do not send CVs, we cannot accept them. The information you provide is crucial in helping us assess your suitability for an interview. Please complete all sections of the form clearly and thoroughly.

Key Information we need:

  • Personal details: Ensure your contact information, including phone number and email address, is accurate.
  • Employment history: Provide a complete employment history, explaining any gaps. If you haven't had paid employment, detail any relevant experience, like work experience or volunteering.
  • Education: If you're a university student, include your university and degree title. This includes any degree(s) you are currently working towards.

We recommend that your application form is completed on a laptop or desktop computer and not a mobile phone. This is so you can fill in each section with appropriate detail.

If you have any difficulties with our online application form or have any queries, please contact the Recruitment Team.

Registers will become available on the day of the session and won’t be visible beforehand. Please aim to complete them within 48 hours to ensure the information provided is accurate and up to date.

We deliver the majority of our tuition in-person as this has been proven to have the greatest impact on the attainment of the young people we work with.

There may be some opportunities to tutor online, but as these are limited and in demand, we cannot guarantee the availability of any online work.

You must advise us as soon as possible if there are any changes to either the hours, the days, or the number of children within the tuition assignment you are delivering. You should contact your Programme Coordinator directly, either by phone or email, with the details.

We require a minimum of two references:

  • Character Reference: This should be from someone who knows you outside of a work or academic setting and can speak about your personal qualities, integrity, and suitability for working with young people. This could be a community group leader, sports coach, religious leader, youth worker etc.
  • Professional Reference: This can be academic (e.g., a teacher, tutor) or from an employer, focusing on your skills and work ethic in those settings.

To ensure impartiality, neither referee can be a relative or a friend, and you must have known each other for at least six months.

This section is your chance to shine and tell us why you're the right person to become a tutor with Tutor Trust! Using specific examples, please explain how your knowledge, skills, and experience align with the essential and desirable criteria outlined in the Person Specification. Instead of simply stating that you meet the criteria, describe how you meet them by providing context.

If you don’t have formal work experience, that’s ok! Focus on any relevant skills, volunteer work, tutoring you’ve done informally, or examples of responsibility and commitment from school or extracurricular activities. We value your potential and enthusiasm just as much.

We accept international equivalents if you did not attend school in the UK, such as IGCSEs, WASSCE, or Irish Junior Cycle. Please fill out your qualifications in the Education Details section on the application form.

As many as you like! But it is important to remember that you are responsible for your own timetable and how assignments will fit together.

Always make sure that you leave enough time for travel between assignment times. With every assignment, we expect tutors to commit to the full length (usually 12-15 weeks).
