We’re a proudly Northern charity that provides tutoring in schools on a not-for-profit basis. Our mission is to transform lives through tutoring – we offer subsidised, high-quality tutoring to young people who might otherwise not have access to a tutor. We believe in equity in education, regardless of postcode or background, so every young person can unlock their full potential.

We partner with primary and secondary schools, colleges and other educational providers to deliver high-quality, high-impact tutoring in English, maths and science to young people across Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire and Merseyside. In addition, we also work with young people in Alternative Provision (AP) settings and with cared for children.

Why tutor with us

Tutoring with us is an incredibly rewarding role. If you're based in Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire or Merseyside and want to earn money and work flexibly while supporting children and young people in your local community, we'd love to hear from you.

About the role

  • You’ll tutor in secondary science.
  • You’ll plan and deliver tuition for groups of up to four pupils.
  • You’ll form impactful relationships with pupils over the course of a tuition assignment (usually 15 weeks).
  • You will work on a self-employed basis.
  • Tutoring usually takes place during the school day on the school premises.

What we’re offering

Make a difference in young people’s lives across the North. As a tutor, you’ll:

  • £22 per hour*. This is the minimum we'll pay you to plan and deliver each hour of tuition.
  • Work with small groups of pupils.
  • Gain key teaching skills from our core tutor training programme (which is delivered online and takes 10-15 hours to complete).
  • Have access to ongoing learning and development opportunities to help boost your knowledge and professional skills.
  • Work on a self-employed basis.

What we’re looking for

  • A minimum of three hours of availability per week, though your actual hours may vary based on school demand.
  • For Secondary tutors, a grade of A/7 in the relevant GCSE subject (or equivalent). Extenuating circumstances will be considered.
  • Willingness to undergo an enhanced DBS check, provided and paid for by The Tutor Trust.
  • Ability to register as self-employed in the UK. Read our FAQs if you’re unsure about your eligibility to do so.
  • No teaching experience is required but you should demonstrate a commitment to our mission, a love of your chosen subject, and a passion for helping others.

Information resources

We require a minimum of two references:

  • Character Reference: This should be from someone who knows you outside of a work or academic setting and can speak about your personal qualities, integrity, and suitability for working with young people. This could be a community group leader, sports coach, religious leader, youth worker etc.
  • Professional Reference: This can be academic (e.g., a teacher, tutor) or from an employer, focusing on your skills and work ethic in those settings.

To ensure impartiality, neither referee can be a relative or a friend, and you must have known each other for at least six months.

We're asking whether you anticipate any challenges - such as scheduling conflicts, other commitments, or location - that might affect your ability to carry out your tutoring responsibilities reliably. This helps us ensure we can support you effectively and maintain a consistent experience for students.

If you're not a UK citizen but your immigration status allows you to work as self-employed in the UK, then you should check your Right to Work (link opens on the UK Government website) before applying.

If you're not a UK citizen and your immigration status doesn't allow you to work as self-employed in the UK, then you wouldn't be able to be a self-employed tutor with us.

If you have lived in a country outside of the UK for a consecutive period of 6 months or more within the last 5 years you are advised to have an overseas police check completed. You should consult the UK Government's guide to criminal records checks for overseas applicants.

If you don’t have formal work experience, that’s ok! Focus on any relevant skills, volunteer work, tutoring you’ve done informally, or examples of responsibility and commitment from school or extracurricular activities. We value your potential and enthusiasm just as much.

We want to support you if you need an adjustment during the recruitment process. The Tutor Trust is committed to making sure that our selection methods are fair to everyone. If you request a Reasonable Adjustment on your application form, a member of our recruitment and development team will contact you to understand and confirm the type of adjustment(s) you need.

Adjustments will be offered based on your needs and considered on a case-by-case basis, so please don’t be afraid to ask for help if you think you need it. If you have any questions about Reasonable Adjustments, get in touch.

We are building a tutor community that mirrors the diverse backgrounds of the young people we support. We actively encourage applications from individuals with varied experiences and perspectives, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds and those with lived experiences of marginalisation, valuing the unique experiences shaped by diverse and intersecting aspects of identity (like race, gender, class, and disability) and lived experience of marginalisation. We believe this diversity enriches our team and enables us to connect with and support our pupils more effectively.

Our application form includes equity monitoring questions. The information you provide will help us monitor the effectiveness of our recruitment policies and procedures in the long term and will form part of your record if your application is successful.

We aim to create an inclusive recruitment process. If you require any reasonable adjustments to participate fully in the application or interview stages, please let us know.

Yes, definitely! Please include details about your current degree, such as your course, university, and expected graduation date.

We accept international equivalents if you did not attend school in the UK, such as IGCSEs, WASSCE, or Irish Junior Cycle. Please fill out your qualifications in the Education Details section on the application form.

At Tutor Trust, Widening Participation means making sure we provide equal access and opportunities for everyone, especially those from backgrounds that are underrepresented in education. Through our Tutor Access Programme (TAP), we aim to build a tutor team that reflects the communities and young people we support.

We ask if you identify with any of the listed backgrounds to help us fairly assess your application and ensure our team is diverse and inclusive. Sharing this info is voluntary - if you’d rather not say, just select I prefer not to specify. If you want to know more about how we handle your data, you can contact us or read the Privacy Policy.

This section is your chance to shine and tell us why you're the right person to become a tutor with Tutor Trust! Using specific examples, please explain how your knowledge, skills, and experience align with the essential and desirable criteria outlined in the Person Specification. Instead of simply stating that you meet the criteria, describe how you meet them by providing context.

Use of AI

While we understand AI can assist with writing, your personal statement must be your own original work. We are looking for your unique perspective, your personal experiences, and your genuine passion for this role. Submissions that are found to be primarily AI-generated will not be considered further. Please use AI only as a tool for structuring or refining your own thoughts and words. The core content, examples, and your individual voice should be clearly evident and authentic.

We're eager to get to know the real you. Let your individuality shine through!
