Job Title: English Tutor

Location: Greater Manchester

About us:

Proudly Northern, we're a not-for-profit charity transforming young lives through subsidised, high-quality tutoring. We champion educational equity, ensuring support reaches those who need it most, regardless of postcode or background.

Specialising in impactful SATs and GCSE tutoring in core subjects (English, maths, science), we collaborate with schools, colleges, and Alternative Provision providers throughout Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, Merseyside, and Tees Valley. We are particularly committed to supporting young people in Alternative Provision and cared for children.

Why tutor with us?

Joining us as a tutor is an incredibly rewarding role. If you want to make a difference to the lives of young people, earn money and work flexibly while supporting children and young people in your local community, we encourage you to apply.

About the role:

As a tutor, you'll plan and deliver tuition for small groups of up to four pupils (possibly with some larger groups of up to 6), building meaningful relationships over the course of a typical assignment of 15 hours. This self-employed role takes place during the school day, so applicants must be available on weekdays between the hours of 8 am to 4pm.

What we're offering:

  • Make a real difference: Contribute directly to educational equity in the North.
  • Comprehensive training and development: Gain valuable transferrable skills from our tutor training programme. This programme is delivered online, through a mix of self-led and group training sessions and requires approximately 10-15 hours of commitment over a period of 3 weeks. Please note that tutors are not paid extra for completing this initial training.
  • Flexible self-employment: Fit tuition around your existing commitments.
  • Competitive pay: Earn a minimum of £22 per hour for planning and delivering tuition.

Essential criteria

We value potential, passion for education, and the ability to connect with young people. We welcome applicants with strong critical thinking, communication skills, and enthusiasm for their subject.

  • Subject knowledge & skills:
    • Demonstrable skills and knowledge equivalent to a grade 6 at GCSE in English Language.

Flexibility on formal qualifications: We recognise that valuable subject knowledge and skills can be acquired through various routes. If you do not meet the GCSE grade requirement, please tell us in your application if you:

    • Studied that subject at A-Level;
    • Are currently studying for a degree in the subject or a closely-related field;
    • Demonstrated ability to apply your subject knowledge through an extended period of relevant work or volunteering experience where you have applied your subject knowledge directly;
    • We recognise that valuable skills and understanding come from diverse educational journeys and lived experiences. We particularly welcome individuals with experience of educational disadvantage or from backgrounds underrepresented in higher education, as this brings crucial insights for relating to and supporting our pupils.

  • Aged 18 or over
  • Awareness of safeguarding young people. Successful candidates will be required to complete Tutor Trust's safeguarding training upon successful interview and annually thereafter.
  • A genuine passion for education and a belief in educational equity for all young people
  • Available for tutoring during the school day (Mon-Fri, 08:00-16:00) and able to travel to schools within your local area.
  • Ability to clearly explain concepts, build rapport with pupils from diverse backgrounds, adapt teaching methods to individual needs.
  • Communicate effectively with school/college staff and colleagues at Tutor Trust.
  • Ability to build impactful relationships with pupils over a sustained period (up to 15 school weeks) to support their progress.
  • Willingness to contribute to Tutor Trust's development and advocacy by providing regular feedback, suggesting programme improvements, and promoting our mission of educational equity.

Background checks:

The following are mandatory requirements for all applicants.

  • Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check: All successful applicants must be willing to undergo an Enhanced DBS check plus reference checks.
  • Right to Work in the UK: All applicants must be legally entitled to work in the UK.
  • Self-employment status: Applicants must be able to register as self-employed with HMRC for tax purposes.

Disclaimer: For advice about working for yourself please check the guidance on the HMRC government website. View and prove your immigration status: get a share code - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).

The Tutor Trust is committed to safeguarding and takes its responsibility seriously. It is a legal requirement that all our tutors have an enhanced DBS check on the update service (which would be paid for by The Tutor Trust). It is an offence to apply for a role if you are barred from engaging in regulated activity relevant to children. You can read our full child protection and safeguarding policies and practices on our website: Safeguarding | The Tutor Trust.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of working with young people from a variety of backgrounds, is highly desirable (but not essential). We welcome all applicants who can demonstrate transferable skills relevant to the role (such as mentoring, communication, leadership, or problem-solving, including those with experience outside of traditional educational or tutoring settings). Please highlight these skills in your application.
  • Understanding of systemic inequalities: It would be advantageous for candidates to have an understanding of the systemic inequalities that impact educational outcomes for young people from marginalised backgrounds.
  • Higher academic qualifications:  Applicants with higher academic qualifications (e.g., A-Levels, university degrees) in their chosen subject area are welcome to apply, as this may open up opportunities to be involved in some of our diversified programmes.
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS): While QTS is welcomed for the pedagogical expertise it offers, it is not a requirement. We greatly value the subject knowledge and varied backgrounds of all applicants, regardless of QTS status.

Our commitment to equity:

We are building a tutor community that mirrors the diverse backgrounds of the young people we support. We actively encourage applications from individuals with varied experiences and perspectives, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds and those with lived experience of marginalisation, valuing the unique experiences shaped by diverse and intersecting aspects of identity (like race, gender, class, and disability) and lived experience of marginalisation. We believe this diversity enriches our team and enables us to connect with and support our pupils more effectively.

We aim to create an inclusive recruitment process. If you require any reasonable adjustments to participate fully in the application or interview stages, please let us know.
